The reason we have been unable to prevent greed is our politicians have been guilty of greed for many years. Labours policy of reducing child poverty was always going to be a non-starter as long as economic migrants with children keep on coming into the country. Also can someone please tell me what benefits East European beggers (such as those being persecuted in Belfast) have brought to our country?

The social evils that beset this nation in the first decade of the 21st century are rising income inequality brought about by greed and stupidity, the failure of the state education system to deliver education and training to meet the needs and demands of industry and commerce and, an overcrowded small island that already had 10 million people of working age, 16 - 65, classed as economically inactive.

Besides, public opinion across Europe, Asia and the US is very consistent in considering that the gap between the rich and the poor, in developed and developing countries, is too wide and that the wealthy should pay more taxes. Indeed income inequality has become the most contentious political issue in many countries as Globalization has created a "superclass" of rich people in developed and developing nations but also an increasing number of people living in real and relative poverty.

According to a Harris poll conducted on behalf of the FT, very strong majorities of people in five European countries, ranging from 76 per cent in Spain to 87 per cent in Germany, consider that income inequality has become too great and that the higher paid should pay more in taxation; only Japan, where 65 per cent believe that income inequality is too wide, but this is most probably based on the fact that the gap between the lowest and highest paid in that country is nowhere near the same as in, for example, the US, the UK and other western nations.

In Britain 75 per cent of respondents believe those on low incomes, considered to be less than 60 per cent of the median income or less than £16,000 a year, should pay much less in income taxation and this is the primary reason for the furore over the scrapping of the 10p rate of income taxation; in China, which has seen incredible rates of growth during the last two decades, 80 per cent of respondents said that income inequality is now far too great; and, in the same poll conducted in the US, which is normally seen as tolerant of income inequality, 78 per cent of respondents also believe that the gap is too wide and that taxation should be changed to increase the burden on the higher earners.

In Britain income inequality is a result of the continuing loss of our industrial and manufacturing base coupled with the outsourcing, off-shoring or exporting of jobs in the service sector call centre work in IT, telecommunications, banking and finance, insurance and travel. Once those jobs are lost then, just like selling off the family silver and the family gold, it will be very difficult to get them back.

I was reading about Islam and i found very good principal to manage poverty in society, let me share

Every one has to pay 2.50% of his savings every year to poor people. And this rule apply on a certain date of every year.It is one of the greatest rule but even not Muslim follows it.

Tony Rhodes, you are NOT a Carer so you have NO RIGHT to patronise us (Carers) by thinking you have a right to speak FOR us. Get a job, get a life and leave the fight for Carers TO Carers

People need to take back their COUNTRY!!! Don't sit back and let them screw you over, this is only going to get worse and people who need to make a choice between food on the table or heating their home, which by the looks of this dismal situation, people will be without homes soon, that is beyond disgraceful. Everyone is trying to deal with this situation, and it's only adding stress and mounting problem on top of problem where at one time, this "once" "great" country would have never let things get this far. There is too much greed and they need to be stopped in their tracks. After all, what will become of "them" when the poor don't support their sorry bums any more! They have a lot to answer to.

Hey for anyone looking for some real debate on poverty you might be interested in this link - http://www.spectacle.co.uk/spectacleblog/?p=62

It's about the causes of poverty, a real discussion on what causes it, whose fault it is etc...as you know David Cameron recently criticised those living in poor areas in Britain because they didn't do enough to get themselves out of the situation.

This is an interesting place to debate as there are conflicting opinions on whose fault poverty really is - those who are poor or the rich?

After reading all the previous posts, most see socialism as a way of removing inequalities and reducing poverty. Well, consider, we have had a socialist government for 11 years and it's made a bigger hash of everything - child poverty is up, crime is up, come to think of it, everything is up. Maybe people just ought to examine why people choose to stay at the bottom of the pile. With so many benefits available, it encourages laziness, destroys initiative and has made divorce and single motherhood boom. I say there is no true poverty in this country other than poverty of spirit - just look at all those kids in poverty and total up what it cost to dress them. The choices these people make on how to spend their money - sorry, but there is no excuse for it.

As for the whiners who bang on about violence against women, unequal pay for women and lack of choices, they should really look long and deep. It's a fact, a woman does the same job as a man, she is paid the same - it's illegal not to do so. Women working longer hours than men? That really depends on what you count as work and most surveys show( when ALL work is included, men in fact still work longer hours. Women in general CHOOSE lower paid work and a question to ask any woman is "how much do you pay your cleaner?" You can bet it ain't the £8ph they may be earning in a call center - so who keeps their pay low? As for violence against women, more comprehensive surveys demonstrate 70% of all domestic violence is instigated by the woman (32 nation survey), women go for divorce in around 70% of all cases. So who is the greatest cause of female and child poverty?

The best way to defeat all these socials ills is really education. Educate people to a higher expectation of moral, ethical and social values but be prepared to give a helping hand to those unable to reach up. And those undeserving poor that will always be with us? Well, you can take them out of a slum but you can't take the slum out of them- leave them to it.

As 25% of the voting population have a disability, it would make sense for any government to take notice of them and not sideline them. A quarter of the population and we are being ignored, how stupid for any political party to do that.
Does anyone know that 2008 is the year of the Assistance Dog? No? I thought so!
The Human Rights and Equalities Commission has swallowed up the Disability Rights Commission, try finding anything to do with disabilities on the site, you will be lucky if you can.

Am I bitter, hmm yes.
